Scotland II -- Callander
At risk of overwhelming everyone with photospam, herewith Scottish week 2, staying in the much-more-pleasant-than-its-name Stank, by Loch Lubnaig, near Callander in the Trossachs...

Ben A'an: at around 450m, this rocky peak is proof that altitude isn't a good measure of quality of mountains
Ben Venue: a craggy double peak with exquisite views that also falls far short of Munro height
Ben Lawers: at 1214m, my highest Munro, but nowhere near as pretty as either of the previous mountains
Ben More from the pass below Ben Venue
The notched peak of Ben Lomond dominates the surrounding valleys
The islands of Loch Lomond from Ben Lomond; an atmospheric weather day
The gorgeous Loch Katrine: the eponymous lake in 'The Lady of the Lake', as well as the Victorian water supply for Glasgow
--from Ben A'an
--from Ben Venue, with the Crianlarich mountains spread out behind; the little dot is the steamer
Loch Earn from the Glen Ogle railway trail & former military road
Glen Ogle
Mountains near the head of Glen Ogle; not sure which these are
Wood & water in Glen Ledard
Waterfall of Ledard Burn: Walter Scott is supposed to have written Rob Roy sitting beside it (one hopes he read the notice)

Thanks for those. I don't know those parts, but it does look very like a slightly bigger version of the Lake District, with sparser settlement and possibly less bracken - I remember seeing some in one picture but wasn't as conscious of it as I would be in the Lakes.

I'd never seen the Trossachs before. They are rather like the English Lakes; the major difference is that there's a lot more conifer plantation these days. I don't remember much bracken, though the woods have a lot of ferns.

Do you mind if I send some of your links to my critique partners? I'm the only member of the group who's traveled in the UK, so I sometimes send them links to help them picture my settings. (My heroine grew up in the Highlands, spends most of the novel homesick, and makes it back in the epilogue.)

So, SO beautiful. Thanks so much for these.

I miss it. I want to go back. I got eaten alive by midges at Crianlarich once, but I'd put up with it to be there again.

I'm missing it already; we've been to the Highlands at this time of year three times in a row now. I got bitten by midges taking the sunset & dawn photos in the Glen Coe set; I think you can avoid the blighters by going in May/early June, but that time of year's rarely convenient for us.

I'm sorry it's taken me so long to look at these!

They're gorgeous - thank you so much for posting both lots of pictures. I'm a fool for mountains and water myself, and when you add photos of sunsets, as well, you make it look and sound an absolutely wonderful time. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

I'm glad you liked them. I find mountains, water & trees are all very happiness inducing in different ways.
